Chubby Fish

Cannonborough-Elliotborough · $$$ · seafood, lowcountry, oysters

Chef James London, a Charleston native, opened Chubby Fish in 2018 and still takes no reservations. The menu changes daily around what local fishermen and farmers bring in. The James Beard Foundation named it a 2026 semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant, its second straight year on that list, per Charleston City Paper, and City Paper readers voted London Best Restaurant Chef in Best of Charleston 2026. The Post and Courier points to caviar sliders and grilled oysters with crab fat curry, and to the adjacent bar, Seahorse. It is Recommended in the inaugural MICHELIN Guide American South.

Coda del Pesce

Isle of Palms · $$$ · italian, seafood, pasta

An upstairs room at the beach with no ground-floor dining room to walk past. City Paper's Top 50 for summer 2026 says chef and owner Ken Vedrinski, formerly of the downtown restaurant Trattoria Lucca, built a second-story dining room with brick walls, reclaimed wood floors and, in what the paper calls a rarity for the Lowcountry, floor-to-ceiling windows on the Atlantic. Handmade pasta anchors the menu, including ricotta gnudi with mushrooms and guanciale.

FIG

Mike Lata and Adam Nemirow opened FIG in 2003 with a menu that changes daily, and it has run that way for more than two decades, per The Post and Courier. The venue describes itself as a neighborhood restaurant built on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. The same owners run The Ordinary. Lowland's chef Matthew Dion and Malagón's Juan Cassalett both cooked here earlier in their careers. It is Recommended in the inaugural MICHELIN Guide American South.

Seahorse

Cannonborough-Elliotborough · small plates, seafood, cocktails

The bar next door to the hardest table in town. The Post and Courier's 2026 itinerary (14 January 2026) says to pop by Chubby Fish's next-door bar, Seahorse, for some of the top cocktails in Charleston. The bar describes itself as a small cocktail bar and supper club with great cocktails, excellent wine and a small, ever-changing food menu, and it does not take reservations.

The Establishment

French Quarter · seafood, new american, lowcountry

The Establishment opened in May 2018 in the James Gregorie House, built around 1791 and named for the Scottish merchant who lived there. Executive chef Elliott Howells has been in the kitchen since opening and took the top job in 2021; he came to Charleston in 2002 and trained at the French Culinary Institute, per Charleston Wine + Food. The menu centers on sustainably sourced seafood and changes daily. The house has two dining rooms, a wine cellar, two private rooms and a chef's counter on an open kitchen, plus live music on Saturday nights. It is Recommended in the inaugural MICHELIN Guide American South.
