Bessinger's BBQ

West Ashley · bbq, southern, burgers

South Carolina mustard-sauce barbecue. Destination BBQ says brothers Thomas and Melvin Bessinger opened on Savannah Highway in the early 1960s, that Thomas kept this West Ashley restaurant, and that his sons Tommy and Michael run it today. Pork shoulders are smoked for hours over wood (the guide's summary table says hickory and oak) and served with the family's mustard-based sauces; hash over rice and oversized onion rings are the long-time orders. The venue's own site names its 'signature mustard sauce'. Shoulders, not whole hog.

Melvin's BBQ

Mount Pleasant · bbq, burgers

Melvin's is the Bessinger family's barbecue house, and its style is the mustard sauce tradition. The family story on the site starts with Joseph 'Big Joe' Bessinger, who cooked pork in a pit dug in the ground near Orangeburg and opened the Holly Hill Cafe in 1939; his son Melvin learned the Golden Secret sauce at ten. The site says pulled pork shoulders are basted in that mustard sauce, and its shirts read 'All-Wood'. It lists Southern Living's Top 50 BBQ in the South for 2025. A second Melvin's is on Folly Road on James Island.

Melvin's BBQ (James Island)

James Island · bbq, burgers

Melvin's calls itself South Carolina's original family of mustard based BBQ. It is a Bessinger family business, and locals on r/Charleston say it has the best gold sauce in the area. They also send people there for the burger, which won as many votes as the barbecue in this year's threads. A second room is at 925 Houston Northcutt Blvd in Mount Pleasant.

Robert's Bar B Que

North Charleston · bbq, burgers

A lunch-only barbecue counter that calls itself the home of the Super Pig and also claims the best cheeseburgers in town. The tourism office describes it as family owned, serving barbecue, hash, potato salad and onion rings. It is open five days a week and closes at three.
